Welcome
The European Shock Society
The mission of the European Shock Society:
The primary objective of the European Shock Society is to advance understanding of the pathophysiology and to improve treatment of shock, trauma and sepsis and/or allied disciplines.
The aforementioned shall be achieved by:
- Promoting basic and clinical sciences and encouraging the exchange of knowledge and ideas via scientific meetings and conferences, newsletters and/or personal communication among ESS members and beyond.
- Encouraging professional education and mentoring of the young investigators in shock, trauma, and sepsis.
Dear ESS friends, colleagues and sympathizers,
The next, 20th European Shock Society (ESS) congress is approximately eight months away. The 2023 congress will be quite unique given that it marks the 40th anniversary of ESS - an excellent opportunity to finally meet face-to-face and make up for the past years of physical absence. Following the footsteps of the previous Austrian presidents (H. Redl, S. Bahrami), the 2023 congress takes place, yet again, at the European crossroads - Vienna. A city with a balanced ambience of history, elegance, art and science - a welcoming place for such an anniversary.
As before, this biennial event will merge translational sciences with clinical needs in the area of critical care illnesses. Both the scientific as well as social program are worthy of your presence - see the simplified block program below. We are honored to welcome in Vienna several renown scientists. Our speakers, who come from all corners of the European continent (and beyond) will ensure an exciting thematic diversity and top meritorious quality.
The ESS congress website will be launched mid-February and registration/abstract submission will open soon after. Once online, the congress website will be frequently updated to inform you about the preparatory steps, detailed program and deadlines.
Thus, we are looking forward to your participation in this scientifically important and enjoyable event in the beautiful city of Vienna. Personally, I cannot wait to see you’all again in person!
With best regards,

M. Osuchowski
ESS President

The ESS Statement of Support to the Ukraine
Any professional scientific society should maintain impartiality, inclusivity and collegiality, focusing activities on the area of its expertise.
However, adhering to these premises should never replace basic human decency in the face of immoral actions and the need for empathy towards fellow human beings in need. The European Shock Society (ESS) stands for the European spirit of free, respectful and peaceful coexistence of all people.
ESS feels compelled not to remain indifferent but to issue a strong condemnation of the Russian Federation's recent premeditated invasion of sovereign and democratic Ukraine. Although the ESS executive committee fully realizes that such a statement is only symbolic, we collectively believe that symbols do matter.
Above all, however, we wish to express our deepest sympathy to Ukraine and its suffering citizens, with special regard to our fellow Ukrainian scientist colleagues. ESS will do its best to extend its collegial support to the research community of Ukraine within the Society's resources and potential.
The Executive Committee of the European Shock Society
The ESS has created a resource for ESS members who are looking for networking opportunities and would like to share their areas of interest with other experts.
This information will be stored in our members' database which will be made publicly available on the ESS website for other professionals to view. Email addresses will not be published.
If on browsing the database you would like to make contact with an individual, please use the contact form at the bottom of each member's page. A request will then be forwarded to the individual on your behalf.
